The Bobby Fisher Memorial Building

The Bobby Fisher Memorial Building (BFMB) is a strange place. Located at 1644 North Capitol St. NW, the building is a century old next year. It is approximately 4,500 square feet (maybe more) distributed between two floors and a basement.

Until the early months of 2007 the building had remained unoccupied and abandoned for about 15 years (with an eviction of a delinquent tenant who stored all their junk inside and left it to the owners to deal with somewhere along the line). The catalysts for fixing up the building and bringing it up to code were a couple of kids willing to get down and dirty (and their connections to old people with legitimacy). The Borf Brig ade held the grand opening on May 18th, 2007 with their extraordinary and "controversial" exhibit The Consolation of Ruin celebrating the life of a friend, and recounting/explaining their course of action in the wake of his suicide. The building is in his namesake, not the chess player's (Bobby Fischer, with a "c").

It's a strange place, simply because you won't find many spaces run by youth, for youth--untainted by mainstream ideals of "making it"... because we made it ourselves. The space currently acts as an arts and music space, both methods to break down the disparity and alienation of daily life if used correctly. It's been a bit shaky thus far, experimenting and trying to figure stuff out, and mainly sticking to the things we know (like indie and punk rock), but we'll get the hang of it.

We are going to try to make some sort of calendar of events to let people know what's up, so bear with us.
